Interview with the designer Nick Alston

Name?

Nick Alston

Where do you live?

I’m currently living in London

What´s your profession?

I’m a freelance illustrator, but as with most aspiring illustrators I’ve had to do a bunch of other jobs to survive.

How did you get into design?

I’ve always doodled and I guess that my illustrations are just a continuation of this… When I went to art college I had a pretty open mind as to what discipline to choose. I guess that illustration felt like the natural route for me to take.

What technique do you use to create your images?

My illustrations are usually hand drawn and coloured using Photoshop. I like to keep things pretty simple – line drawings with flat colours. I like printmaking a lot, and I enjoy the process of turning my work into screen prints when I get the opportunity. It can be pretty laborious and some days it all seems to go wrong, but it’s usually worth it in the end.

Whose work do you consider an influence, and who is around now we should check out?

I like quite a bit of outsider art. Seripop create amazing screenprints that always amaze me. As far as illustrators, I like the work of Marcus Oakley, Jon Boam, Luke Best, Ed J Brown, Matt Houston (AKA NeverRider), Nigel Peake, Brian Cronin, Bob London, Ian Stevenson and loads more that I can’t think of right now…

Future plans?

Just trying to keep my illustration work going and I’ll see where that takes me.
